About Mikumi National Park

Just 283 kilometers (175 miles) west of Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Park offers one of Tanzania’s most accessible safari experiences. Covering about 3,230 square kilometers, Mikumi is part of the larger Selous ecosystem, providing an excellent introduction to Tanzania’s southern circuit safaris.

Highlights

Mikumi’s open floodplains resemble the Serengeti in miniature, teeming with giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, elephants, and lions. Hippos and crocodiles fill the Mkata River pools, while more than 400 bird species color the skies. Its ease of access and reliable wildlife make it ideal for short safaris or first-time visitors.

Getting There

The park is a 4–5 hour drive from Dar es Salaam along a paved highway, making it popular for weekend safaris. Charter flights are also available to Mikumi Airstrip for faster travel. Mikumi often serves as a gateway to Ruaha or Nyerere (Selous) National Park.

What to Do

Visitors can enjoy game drives, bird watching, and walking safaris guided by park rangers. The Vuma Hills viewpoint offers sweeping views across the plains. With its abundant wildlife and proximity to the city, Mikumi is perfect for travelers seeking a convenient yet rewarding safari adventure.
