Kilkuletwa Hot Springs Day Trip

OVERVIEW

Hidden between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru lies one of northern Tanzania’s best-kept secrets—Kikuletwa Hot Springs, also known as Chemka Hot Springs. This beautiful oasis offers crystal-clear, turquoise waters surrounded by lush vegetation and tangled fig trees whose roots dip into the pool. Despite the name, the water is pleasantly warm rather than hot, making it perfect for a relaxing swim. Located about 1.5 to 2 hours from Arusha, Kikuletwa Hot Springs is an ideal getaway for travelers seeking a peaceful, scenic break from the city or a rejuvenating experience after a Kilimanjaro climb or safari. The spot is also popular with locals, creating a cheerful, social atmosphere with opportunities to enjoy swimming, rope swings, and local snacks.

Day 1: Kilkuletwa Hot Springs Day Trip

Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your Arusha hotel around 8:00 a.m. for a scenic drive through small villages, banana plantations, and open savannah dotted with acacia trees. As you approach the springs, the road becomes more rustic, offering glimpses of rural Tanzanian life and, on clear days, distant views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Arrive at Kikuletwa Hot Springs by mid-morning and take time to relax, swim, or float in the inviting blue waters. The spring’s constant temperature and gentle current make it a natural pool unlike any other. You can also use the rope swing for fun jumps into the water or simply unwind under the shade of the fig trees.

A picnic lunch or local hot meal is served near the springs, followed by more time to swim, socialize, or explore the surroundings.

In the afternoon, you’ll begin your return drive to Arusha, arriving at your hotel by late afternoon (around 4:30–5:00 p.m.), refreshed and relaxed after a day spent in one of Tanzania’s most tranquil natural settings.
