Arusha National Park Day Trip

OVERVIEW

An Arusha National Park day trip is the perfect introduction to Tanzania’s wilderness, offering incredible scenery and abundant wildlife within a short drive from Arusha town. Though smaller than many other parks, Arusha National Park is remarkably diverse, featuring lush montane forests, rolling grasslands, and striking volcanic landscapes. The park is home to Mount Meru, Africa’s fifth-highest peak, and provides stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days. Visitors can spot giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, and colobus monkeys, while the Momella Lakes attract thousands of flamingos and other colorful birds. The park also allows walking safaris and canoeing, giving visitors a rare chance to experience nature up close. This trip is ideal for travelers with limited time who still wish to enjoy a true Tanzanian safari filled with scenery, wildlife, and adventure.

Day 1: Arusha National Park

Your adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Arusha around 7:30 a.m. for a scenic 45-minute drive to the park gate. After a short briefing and registration, you’ll enter the park for your first game drive through lush forest zones teeming with monkeys and birdlife. Continue to the Ngurdoto Crater for panoramic views of its swampy floor and wildlife grazing below.

By mid-morning, you’ll head toward the Momela Lakes, where flocks of flamingos and waterbirds paint the shores in soft pink hues. Here, you can enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch while taking in the peaceful scenery. Depending on your interests, you may choose a guided walking safari through the forest or an optional canoeing excursion on one of the lakes, both offering a fresh perspective on the park’s wildlife.

In the afternoon, enjoy another leisurely game drive as you make your way back toward the park gate, keeping an eye out for giraffes, buffalo, and other grazing animals silhouetted against Mount Meru’s backdrop. You’ll return to Arusha by late afternoon, arriving at your hotel around 5:00 p.m.—filled with memories of a truly refreshing wilderness escape.
